Choosing Your Wedding Videographer

Your wedding video will probably be the most important reminder of the day you were married so it is important to choose your wedding videographer with care. We hope our guidelines will give you an idea of the questions to ask and what to look for.

  • If they supply a demonstration disc. Is the footage throughout steady, clear, vibrant, focused and sharp? Is the audio clear and crisp? Has it been edited in a modern style?  Does the story flow and hold the interest or is it a bit laborious? Remember, this is their best work, so it should be of the highest standard. If it isn’t and this is the best they produce, what sort of standard will your wedding video be?
  • Do they have any qualifications or belong to a recognized association? As with any business, there are many unskilled and unqualified people offering to film people’s weddings. Unfortunately, anybody can buy a cheap camcorder and set themselves up as wedding videographers. So, it is important to check that they are qualified and have experience in filming weddings. It’s too late after the wedding!
  • Are they full-time professionals or part-timers earning weekend pocket money? Do you want your wedding filmed by an enthusiastic part-timer or a full-time professional? We are not shop- assistants, or taxi drivers by day and wedding videographers at the weekend. We film or edit wedding and event videos all day – every day!
  • Are they legal? Do they have all the necessary insurances to cover them against public and professional liability? After all, accidents can happen. Will they be supplying all the legally required licenses to use [copyright] music on your wedding DVD?   If they don’t care (or don’t know) about their legal responsibilities, at best they are unprofessional, at worse they are cowboys. We are fully insured for public and professional liability and always arrange any required copyright licenses.
  • Will they be using additional microphones during the ceremony and speeches to ensure crisp, clear audio? The ceremony and speeches are a central part of the day and the clarity of the audio is critical. Unfortunately, it simply isn’t possible to get crisp, clear audio by only using an on-camera microphone. We use a mix of high-quality shot-gun mics and small wireless microphones during the ceremony and speeches.
  • How do they film a wedding? Do they use an intrusive style, constantly moving around during the ceremony, pushing cameras in people’s faces and generally upsetting the vicar, the photographer and your guests. There are many people who feel that they need to do this to give their filming an ‘edgy feel’. We believe that camera-work should be discreet and unobtrusive. This way the resulting footage is both natural and spontaneous.
  • What’s included? When comparing packages from various companies, check exactly what’s included , not just how much of the day will be filmed. When comparing prices it is important to check the overall quality being offered including, the type of equipment being used, the experience and qualifications of the videographer, the style of filming and editing plus the terms and conditions as these all form part of the package.

Simply choosing your wedding videographer based on who films the most at the cheapest price may turn out to be poor value if the rest of the package is below standard.
